There are all sorts of do’s and don’ts out there on optimizing your LinkedIn lead generation strategy.

  • Use a professional photo.
  • Connect with the right people.
  • Write an introduction message.
  • Optimize your summary with keywords.
  • Use video.

But, we don’t often hear about optimizing one of the most important pieces of content on LinkedIn: private messages.

Are there ways to get the conversations started?
How do people feel about automated cold pitches?

Seems like a pretty important thing to optimize on a platform that’s all about building business relationships.

Well there’s no reason for us to wonder any more.

A recent poll from Katie Mullen’s, a director of sales training, breaks it down.

2,209 people voted and 50% of them said LinkedIn is not for pitching NEW connections, and I couldn’t agree more.

On LinkedIn, there’s not much worse than accepting a connection request only to get a cold pitch 2 seconds later. Stop that.

Instead, find a way to offer something valuable. Maybe that’s content that solves a challenge, it could be offering to make an introduction, or, heck it could be an invite to be a guest on your next livestream.

Regardless, get to know the person before you even attempt to have a sales conversation. You just might be surprised at what doors start to open.
